The course is designed for postgraduates who wish to make a career in Bio-Informatics. This rapidly growing field, defined as the use of computational methods to assist biology research, is fast becoming the cornerstone of the gathering and analysis of the vast amounts of data that such research is nowadays producing. Among its many applications drug design, data mining and macromolecule sequence analysis are the main. The bio-informatics industry has great potential in terms of career opportunities and India is poised on the brink of a major Biology-IT revolution. The first two semesters of the course cover topics required for a sound knowledge of both Biology-related and IT subjects. These include Molecular Biology, Sequence Analysis, Database Analysis, Programming Skills and Linux. After successful completion of first two semesters of MScBI, if a student wishes to discontinue, such a student will be awarded the PG Diploma in Bio-Informatics (PGDBI). The third and fourth semesters are geared towards providing students with advanced training in areas like Drug Design, Plant Genomics, Advanced IT Topics and Emerging Technologies. After successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the Master of Science in Bioinformatics (MScBI) degree. Objectives : The
course is geared towards realizing the following objectives: - 1 To
give students the requisite knowledge that will enable them to pursue
a career in bioinformatics, both in academia and/or in industry.
2 To give students an in-depth training in both the theoretical
and practical aspects of the topics that bio-informatics encompasses,
including those related to biology as well as IT subjects. 3 To
enable students to acquire an integrated outlook of the subject and to
cater to the needs of researchers in the biotechnology and bio-informatics
